Six NY Harbor Species featured on WNYC's The Brian Lehrer Show
/In early March, Billion Oyster Project helped WNYC’s The Brian Lehrer Show cap off six episodes with a brief, deep dive into the existence of six unique species right here in our local waterways.
Wednesday, March 2: Pete Malinowski, Executive Director at Billion Oyster Project, discussed the Eastern Oyster and how they can help rebuild degraded marine habitat across New York Harbor.
Thursday, March 3: Shinara Sunderlal, Education Outreach Coordinator at Billion Oyster Project, introduced us to the illustrious Lined Seahorse, and what discovering one in person says about local water quality.
Friday, March 4: Ben LoGuidice, a Hatchery Manager at Billion Oyster Project, broke down the beloved Blackish for us — touching on why you wouldn’t want to eat one out of New York Harbor!
Monday, March 7: Agata Poniatowski, Outreach & Engagement Manager at Billion Oyster Project, spoke about the Spider Crab. This is one of her favorite New York Harbor inhabitants, but a lack of waterfront access in NYC’s five boroughs makes sightings somewhat rare.
Wednesday, March 9: Rebecca Resner, a Hatchery Manager at Billion Oyster Project, discussed the small-but-mighty Skillet Fish, how it got its name, and opened up about CSOs — an environmental issue that takes many New Yorkers by surprise.
Thursday, March 10: Ann Fraioli, Director of Education at Billion Oyster Project, brought it all home with the Sea Squirt, and why this one-inch long creature leads to laughs among NYC students monitoring oysters at the water’s edge.
