Billion Oyster Project hosts 5th Annual Research Symposium at the New York Harbor School

On Tuesday, June 25, nearly 150 students from across the five boroughs boarded the Governors Island ferry for the 5th Annual BOP Research Symposium. These students finished off the school year with enthusiastic presentations of their findings on everything from microplastics in our oceans, to plankton in Harlem, to whether it's possible to clean up the Gowanus Canal with oysters.

PS 59 The Harbor View School was one of many schools — from all five boroughs — that made the trip to present their scientific findings. Per tradition, participating students got a chance to try freshly shucked (non-NYC) oysters!

Thank you to the Students Rebuild Ocean Challenge for making this day of learning possible. We also want to thank the Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD) and New York City Council Speaker Johnson and Councilmembers Borelli, Chin, Constantinides and Dromm for supporting our sustainable education programs this year.

As classes wind down across the city, the Billion Oyster Project community is gearing up for a productive summer of volunteering, installations, and oyster reef monitoring — all in a collective effort to restore New York Harbor.
