In 2016, both NYC Parks and Princess Bay Boatmen’s Association (PBBA) agreed to host a “Lemon Creek Cage Study.” This collaborative growth and survival study, conducted by Wagner College and Billion Oyster Project, spanned the creek. This research revealed that growth and survival among oysters was strongest at the lagoon and the mouth of the creek. In May of 2017, Billion Oyster Project installed an oyster nursery at the mouth of the creek on a PBBA dock using OysterGro® cages and 250,000 spat-on-shell oysters.

This oyster nursery is located in an NYC Park near the Princess Bay Boatmen’s Association (PBBA). Similar to the nursery at Great Kills, it has spectacular views and is very quiet. Every once in a while, a kayaker or boater will pass us, leaving or returning from Raritan Bay, and will ask how the oysters are doing. The answer is always, they’re doing great! PBBA is a supportive partner and opens its doors to school and community groups to monitor oysters and explore the waterfront.
