The New York State Thruway Authority’s construction of the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge (formerly the Tappan Zee Bridge) is disrupting several acres of oyster habitat. To compensate for the loss of habitat, the project is required to conduct mitigation, which involves the transfer of local oysters and historic reef materials from the dredge zone to a nearby stockpiled site intended to re-establish future habitat. This oyster restoration project will satisfy requirements identified by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in their permit authorizing the construction of the replacement bridge.
