Originally constructed in 2010, as part of the Oyster Restoration Research Partnership, the Governors Island Reef is in Buttermilk Channel between Governors Island and Brooklyn. The challenging current and wave energy have required multiple adaptive management changes to the design of the original reef. Our welded three-dimensional structures were first piloted at this location, which helped us learn how to build, install, and evaluate fabricated reef structures in NY Harbor.

The Governors Island reef has provided countless opportunities for learning by Harbor School students. In recent years, small oysters installed at this site were overwhelmed by oyster drills (an oyster predator), but we will continue to monitor the reef every few years to assess the remaining oyster population.
