Oysters in the Big Apple: A Celebration and Education
Building 16 in Nolan Park
10-4PM
Open House Event
Billion Oyster Project and Sandy Ground Historical Society are co-hosting an interactive mural of a quilt highlighting the historic Sandy Ground oystering community that once harvested New York Harbor. Sandy Ground, Staten Island also known as Harrisville and Little Africa, is the oldest continuously inhabited free Black settlement in the United States. The community founded by Mose and Silas Harris was known for its strawberry farming, oyster gardening, blacksmithing forge, and countless other contributions.
Additionally, we will have other interactive activities and programming for participants to enjoy inside and outside our exhibit house. (ie. Oyster Reef building Lawn Darts, coloring pages, book reading, and more). We will also have an oyster tank on display.
