For students this summer at PS 676, field experiences became part of their regular school day. Based in Red Hook - walking distance from a variety of waterfront locations, 3rd and 4th graders spent their Fridays with Billion Oyster Project on the banks of New York Harbor.

The Citizens Water Quality Testing Program (CWQT) is a collaboration between the New York City Water Trail Association, Billion Oyster Project, and Hudson River Park's River Project, with support from Two Trees Management. Other partners this year include the Sarah Lawrence Center for the Urban River, SUNY Maritime's Marine Environmental Science program, the Bronx River Alliance, Queens College, Newtown Creek Alliance, the Interstate Environmental Commission, and the Lower Raritan Watershed Partnership. Earth Day is April 22nd! We’re sharing our ambitious 2021 oyster restoration goal and sharing 8 ways you can get involved to support our mission this Earth Week.

Reclaimed oyster shells from restaurants are key to our restoration efforts. Thanks to a group of incredible students at West End Secondary School and Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal, a Bill was developed to give a tax credit to restaurants that are putting in the extra work of collecting and donating shells for the environment.

I would like to take everyone back to 2012 during Superstorm Sandy. Communities around New York City were hit hard by the storm: flooding, broken power lines, fallen trees, people in need of aid. Canarsie, Brooklyn, was one of those communities.
