The Wall Street Hotel Announces Official Partnership with Billion Oyster Project

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW YORK, NY September 29, 2022The Wall Street Hotel is pleased to announce their exclusive partnership with Billion Oyster Project, a non-profit organization which is working to restore oyster reefs to New York Harbor through public education initiatives. Donations through the hotel’s partnership are generated by in-room guest engagements, with offerings like reusable water bottles and custom-designed oyster-inspired gifts for sale as well as an optional donation at room checkout, with literature about the impact of our sustainability initiative and what it means for our city’s harbor.

“We were so delighted to be introduced to the Billion Oyster Project and the incredible work that they’ve been doing in New York Harbor,” says James Paspaley, Executive Director of Australia’s Paspaley Group, the family firm that owns and operates The Wall Street Hotel. “The oyster played such a pivotal role in New York’s history, and oysters are the backbone of our own family history, so the partnership is a natural fit.”

From the oyster shells that used to line Pearl Street just in front of the hotel, to the Paspaley family’s connection to the pearling trade and the hotel's proximity to the harbor - just one block away - oysters are an inextricable part of The Wall Street Hotel’s story. The partnership also extends to the hotel’s signature restaurant La Marchande which contributes to the organization’s Shell Collection Program. Through this initiative, shells that would otherwise be discarded, are repurposed as the base of new oyster reefs put together by thousands of passionate local volunteers, students, and scientists to restore one billion oysters to New York Harbor.

Billion Oyster Project was founded in 2014 by Murray Fisher and Pete Malinowski, who envisioned a healthy, biodiverse New York Harbor, one restored to its former richness and set up sustainably for generations to come. The two also share the fundamental belief that restoration without education is temporary and today, what started as a project of the Harbor School has grown into a city-wide initiative across the five boroughs. Billion Oyster Project currently engages  thousands of volunteers and more than 8,000 students across 100 NYC schools. More than 60 local restaurants, including La Marchande, participate in the Shell Collection Program, which has resulted  in 2 million pounds of recycled shells. To date, the organization has installed 18x oyster reef sites across the harbor which are allowing new populations of oysters to thrive, naturally cleaning the water, protecting the city from coastal erosion and encouraging increased biodiversity.

As part of the hotel’s continued partnership, The Wall Street Hotel has launched the One Billion and One package for guests to book via their website. Guests will be able to enjoy a stay at the hotel, which offers a tranquil oasis in the heart of FiDi, before exploring the facilities or volunteering with Billion Oyster Project. Afterwards, guests will head back to the hotel’s Lounge on Pearl for champagne & oysters to celebrate a day well spent, supporting the restoration of New York’s Harbor. The hotel is also matching dollar for dollar booked through this package to Billion Oyster Project. This package includes overnight accommodations for two nights, champagne & oysters for two in the Lounge on Pearl, two round-trip ferry rides to Governors Island and a bespoke Billion Oyster Project bottle opener.

About Billion Oyster Project

Billion Oyster Project is a nonprofit organization on a mission to restore oyster reefs to New York Harbor through public education initiatives. Why oysters? Their reefs provide habitat for many marine species, have the ability to filter water, and help shield New York City shorelines from storm damage. Founded on the belief that restoration without education is temporary, and observing that learning outcomes improve when students have the opportunity to work on real restoration projects, Billion Oyster Project collaborates with public schools. The crew designs STEM curriculum for NYC schools through the lens of oyster restoration, and engages Urban Assembly New York Harbor School students in large-scale restoration projects.
