Restoring oyster reefs to New York Harbor offers an exciting scientific challenge. While we gratefully draw insights and models from pre-existing restoration projects, there is no roadmap for our work (yet!) because reef restoration has never been achieved at scale in New York Harbor.
As we install reefs, it is imperative that we test various restoration methods, collect data, continuously evaluate our impact, and adapt in response to our discoveries — creating scalable best practices for oyster reef restoration in challenging environments.

Partnering with Restoration Practitioners
Billion Oyster Project is fortunate to collaborate with scientists and restoration practitioners from various industries and organizations. If you’d like to partner with us on a research and/or restoration proposal, please fill out this request form.
Proposal activities may include but are not limited to:
- Access to data (oyster demographics, water quality, biodiversity, etc.)
- Access to Billion Oyster Project’s sites (oyster reefs, oyster nurseries, facilities, etc.)
- Sampling of oysters, shells, benthos, water quality, etc.
- Support through consultation and/or collaboration
