11 ways to connect with New York City nature this Earth Day

It can seem silly to designate one day to celebrate the incredible nature that surrounds us. After all, NYC is a coastal city with 520 miles of shoreline, and there are so many ways to experience and enjoy this nexus of human and wildlife habitat.

Fortunately, our jobs at Billion Oyster Project allow us to experience and appreciate nature on the regular… and we’re thrilled to share that side of our city with you — your students, family, friends, and even colleagues this April and beyond. Over the next two weeks, here are 11 ways that you can join us and our fantastic partners in and around New York Harbor — or support local efforts to connect with New York City nature.

EARTH DAY PETROLEUM PSA

Earth Day 2024 falls on Monday, April 22, and the theme of this year’s event is Planet vs. Plastics. As a water-based organization we were struck by the notion that making a plastic water bottle requires 6X as much water as the bottle itself contains.” With most Earth Day events falling before or after this day, consider taking 10 minutes to read up on how intertwined we’ve become with the petroleum-based product, and take action to reduce its production.
