September was a busy and exciting time for the Billion Oyster Project Shell Collection Program operated by Earth Matter. On top of regular restaurant shell collection, we sorted and collected shells at 10 events. As a result we can add 4,687 lbs of shells to our middens!  Shell collection highlights of the month include The Oysterhood’s Oystoberfest, the first ever Rockaway Oyster Fest, and of course the annual NYHF Regatta.

The Shell Collection Program also hit a milestone in September! We are now collecting shells from 20 restaurants. Our newest restaurant collection partners include EatalyBlue Smoke, DBGB, and Épicerie Boulud. The Shell Collection Program is growing, so if you have a favorite oyster bar or restaurant that you think could be perfect for the program, let us know by emailing

The inaugural Billion Oyster Passport was also a hit with over 2,000 Billion Oyster Plates enjoyed over Oyster Week. If you happened to take a snap of a Billion Oyster Plate, share it with us on our Facebook page!
